Useful Tips

Flights
There are charter flights directly to Corfu, Zante and Preveza (on the mainland, just a few miles from Lefkas) from nearly every airport in the UK and some big cities around Europe. If however you are flying from the USA, Canada, or any other country outside Europe, then you can get a flight to Athens and from there change to a domestic flight to the islands.
You should contact your travel agent or look on the internet for cheap deals. You may also contact us in order to get information about the best deals.

Travel Insurance
You can get your travel insurance through your travel agent, otherwise you should be able to find some good deals on the Internet.

Money
There are ATM machines in most villages where you can draw money with your normal bank card and banks in the bigger places where you can cash traveler's cheques, etc.

Sun Protection
The Mediterranean sun is very pleasant but can be painful as well, if you sunbathe for too long without protection. You can bring your cream from the UK otherwise you will find plenty of choice in the local shops.

We insist that you use a cream instead of an oily lotion because oil will stain the teak deck and create slippery surfaces and handholds, which are dangerous for safety.

Luggage
STORAGE SPACE IS LIMITED ON YACHTS.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING HARD SUITCASES OR HARD BAGS THAT CANNOT FOLD AND FIT IN A CUPBOARD.

The ideal is soft, medium to small size bags which you will either stow away once you have emptied them, or keep them at one side in your cabin with your stuff in them.
If you do have to travel with hard suitcases, please contact our office to see if it is possible to leave them at Lefkas, once you have emptied the contents in your cupboard.

Clothing
Dress code in the Greek Islands is very casual, for men shorts and T-shirts is the norm, and for ladies, light summer dresses or similar to men. Actually, you will probably spent most of the day in your swimming gear.

If you are coming in Spring or Autumn you should bring some warmer clothes just in case it gets a bit cold in the night.
Even for those who want to dress formally (maybe planning to go to a posh restaurant or bar), smart casual is the norm, which would be a pair of trousers and a shirt!

Try to avoid making the common mistake of bringing too much stuff with you, as you will never use it and it will constantly be in your way as storage space is limited.

Bed linen & Towels
Bed linen and pillows are provided, but you should bring your own towels as well as a sea towel (if you use one).

Footwear
On the yacht you should use shoes with soft non-marking soles or flip-flops.

For wondering around the islands and going out, bring whatever is best for you. If you are considering doing a bit of trekking or exploring in the countryside you should bring a pair of sturdy shoes or boots as the terrain can be rocky and rough.

Electricity
The electric circuit of yachts operates at 12V DC. There is a lighter socket, so if you want to be able to charge your mobile phone, please remember to bring the charger you use in your car.

There is an inverter onboard «Alexandros» as well, with an outlet of 220V AC, but it can only be used for light electric devices and for short periods of time as it puts a heavy load on the batteries.
If you do need to charge an electric device on 220V AC, then the best way is to put it in a plug of one of the cafes or tavernas while you are having a drink/meal. You will need a UK to European plug adaptor, which you can buy from Boots or various shops in the airport Duty Free.

Finally, there is a socket for 220V AC (normal household use) which can be used with heavier appliances, but as it works with shore power it can only be used in some marinas.

Medication
If you require any special medication, you should bring it with you as you might not be able to find it in the local pharmacies.

SCUBA Diving
Unfortunately Greek law does not permit diving from yachts and it is only allowed through authorized clubs and schools.
There are plenty of them around the islands, and if you are interested for a bit of SCUBA diving please email and let us know or just tell Thanos and Alicia when you arrive and they will do their best to organize it.

Snorkeling and Fishing Gear
There is some fishing and snorkeling gear onboard, but as it may not fit you well, you can bring your own mask and fins.

Photography
You can buy a film or a disposable camera more or less everywhere in the islands. Remember that Greece is a very sunny place, so if you bring your own film, you better get one with ASA 100 as opposed to the ones with ASA 200-400 that we normally get in the UK and other north European countries.
If you are using a digital camera and planning on taking a lot of photos, then you could bring your camera USB cable and an empty CD, so you can use the yacht computer to save your photos on the CD when the memory card gets full.

Accommodation
If you are considering a sailing holiday but you would like to combine it with staying in rented accommodation on one of the islands for a few days, let us know and we will try to organize that.
